Roses vs. Potatoes?

So today we had the Global Perspective Debate and we had an absolutely hilarious topic to debate on. Roses versus Potatoes. At first glance everyone toppled over giggling in their squeakiest voices, then everyone stopped for a second and thought about. In my opinion you can take the meaning of this in two senses.
- Quite literally, which can behave as a sustainable crop or
- Aesthetics vs Utility
Well, anyhow we were debating in a British Parliamentary format and we as much as possible tried to debate on both aspects. Luckily I was given the liberty of debating against the topic and was persuaded everyone that, in fact, potatoes were marginally better than roses.
So anyhow few of the most common points that were brought up was:
- Potatoes are a sustainable crop
- The price of potatoes are far greater than that of a rose
- Dump a person into a desert with a rose and potato which would you eat?
- The exports of potatoes are far greater than that of roses therefore more people like potatoes (this point was not brought up by me.)
Then we moved on to the metaphorical meaning of this and that is when everyone started to crack up. The points implied were:
- Roses shows positivity and potatoes show fertility
- The growth of a sapling of a potato shows rebirth and a revitalized vigor in life
- Since potatoes represent fertility, you cannot have a rose growing without fertility
Well these are the mostly the points I can throw from the top of my head. Anyhow for those who also debate on this topic hope this helps!
